Online Storage - the current buzzword...

In trend with many corporate giants like Google, Microsoft, yahoo fight for the crown of supremacy, online storage has become an important area of discovery. As the name suggests, it houses the users files like photos, mp3s and other files on to the respective storage directories of the companies that offer the service.

The advantages offered are numerous, some notable ones are:

1. Flexibility to access them anywhere and anytime with just a PC and a browser.
2. Eliminates the need to purchase giant capacity drives.
3. Ability to easily share selective files among trusted users.
4. All these comes free of cost.

Now the (-) points:
1. The corporates offering this service should provide a high and god level security layer.
2. I still do not understand and wonder what would happen if a user gets his password stolen or hijacked. Will these free online storage providers support for such a theft.
3. This service implicitly assumes that the user is armed with lightning speed internet broadband connection assuming users will upload and download large Giga-bytes of data.
4. Premium storages will be tagged with a cost. I wonder if there will be any cost associated to access times as well. (Less access time -> More cost)
5. With just a network drive mapped on to the service provider, the ability to incorporate advertisements suffers a setback suspending the revenue income from this front.

Inspite of the pros and cons, online storage is definitely a feature that will be eagerly anticipated and welcomed widely by the people, and no wonder that companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, EMC are already up with their service.
